State Of Mind (has a lot going for it)

I just got through watching the first two episodes of State Of Mind, the new show with Lili Taylor. It has a lot going for it.

The show is, as the IMDB puts it: “A look at the private and professional lives of therapists — and whether or not these professionals are typically crazier than their patients.” In the case of Lili Taylor’s character, it seems she actually is crazier. She sees things that aren’t there, mostly people, which gives the show a sort of Ally McBeal-ish quality. That’s a good thing.

Another good thing is that the wonderful Ani DiFranco is doing the title song, although she doesn’t really sound like herself there. And while I’ve had a soft spot for Lili Taylor eversince I saw her in Mystic Pizza about two decades ago, I’m also very fond of Theresa Randle’s character Cordelia Banks.

In the pilot episode, Ann Bellowes finds her husband cheating on her and she throws him out of the office building she’s in with all these other shrinks. I don’t care for the guy, but it seems he’ll still have a recurring role in the show. His office is taken by a fresh-out-of-law school lawyer named Barry White, who’s being played by Devon Gummersall. Who? Well, since I’ve never seen My So-Called Life, I only know him as Lisa, the lesbian man on L Word. He’s not doing too much in the pilot episode, except for accuse a therapist of being a pedophile, but he does hint at the fact that he and Ann might become lovers one day. Well, why not.

I’m curious to see what’ll happen next in this show and do recommend the first two episodes.

And since I don’t expect this to be released on any CD anytime soon, here’s the theme song by Ani DiFranco (copy and paste into your browser):
